《地退星翻江蜃》狂暴原始,卻又充滿驚人魅力,來自白髮一雄最受歡迎的《水滸傳》系列作品,此系列作品以十四世紀中國名著〈水滸傳〉(日譯版約1757年出現)命名。此作無論構圖還是色彩均為首屈一指的偉大傑作,洶湧狂野的力量在畫布上激盪翻滾,噴發出震動人心的強大生命力和原始猛勢,盡顯藝術家創作風格。一片猩紅橫掃背景,深酒紅色撕破畫面,與醒目亮眼的綠松石色在多處交鋒碰撞。這位具體派畫家在當年青春正盛之時破天荒以足繪畫,用身軀力量與油彩碰撞交融,開闢了一種狂野的藝術表達方式。白髮一雄的抽象藝術表演充滿激烈狂亂的動作「不只是身體的動作 …… 物質亦隨之騷動起來」。(蔡宇鳴著,〈不只是美,還有恐懼〉,載於《身體與物質:白髮一雄與星野曉的藝術》展覽圖錄,紐約,2015年,頁21-22)

《水滸傳》是白髮一雄首個在歐洲展出的系列作品。自從其創作的國際知名度開始提升後,白髮一雄聽從施泰德畫廊和塔皮耶的建議,為作品取了日文名字。《水滸傳》系列首幅畫作創於1959年,最後一幅則於2001年完成;儘管每幅畫作都以《水滸傳》中一位英雄命名,直到最後一幅畫作完成、揭示出其獨一無二的英雄人物後,藝術家才將作品並成一個系列。在《水滸傳》中,一百單八位好漢為推翻昏庸皇帝而落草為寇,反抗朝廷,劇情激動人心,充滿暴力色彩。此作以第六十九位梁山好漢、地退星「翻江蜃」童猛(日文:Chitaisei Honkoshin)為名。童猛原是鹽走私商人,深諳水性、擅划船。此作有一處醒目顯眼的藍,如波濤般淹沒下方翻騰的紅,或許因此得名「翻江蜃」 。藝術家從天花板上吊下繩子,自己執繩而盪於空中,以足繪畫。此作中蘊含的野蠻力量令觀者感到一種劇烈的能量,比西方抽象表現主義中的姿態繪畫更有過之而無不及。Namiko Kunimoto觀察到,白髮一雄的《水滸傳》系列「擁護亞洲文化,在以身體作畫的狂野過程中既表現亦終結這一點,並因此否認了自身與美國抽象表現主義間的任何關係。」(Namiko Kunimoto,〈白髮一雄:英雄與暴力〉,2013年,163頁)

Hirai Shoichi將白髮一雄對於《水滸傳》的興趣歸因於其讀書時接觸到的文學作品(同上,162頁),而Namiko則深入探究白髮一雄及其藝術的傳奇敘事意義,她觀察到:「白髮一雄的作品和他藝術家的身份以英雄敘事為背景而成立,英雄則因其高尚英勇的功績和強壯體魄而成為英雄(同上,158頁)。藝術家的抽象畫作並非諷喻,其身體留下的索引痕跡可能暗喻他與故事中英雄的微妙關聯。(同上,162頁)。對於Namiko而言,白髮一雄在其早期表演藝術作品中,便開始涉足探索英雄主義和藝術之間的聯繫,包括其現在公認的表演藝術典範之作《挑戰泥土》(1955年),白髮一雄只著纏腰布,用自己的身體去撞擊並揉合地上的一堆泥土、混凝土和砂石,與物質搏鬥至精疲力盡。在另外一場表演藝術《請進》(1955年)中,藝術家在蘆屋戶外以十根二十三英尺高的紅色桿子築成一個結構。Namiko寫道:「白髮一雄赤裸上身,攜帶工具……站在他那類似圓錐帳篷形的房屋內,開始舞動手中的斧子劈向紅柱。每劈一下,木屑紛飛,柱體留下白色的印痕,藝術家和周邊少數觀眾都身處危險之中。」(同上,158頁)

Kunimoto繼續道:「同〈水滸傳〉中的英雄人物一樣 ,白髮一雄的藝術藉著暴力元素達致卓越境界。」戰後具體派的理念在白髮一雄的作品中被前所未有地實現並達到高峰;他將工具(「具」)與身體(「體」)結合,無懼地走出日本原爆後的頹垣廢墟,他要讓因戰爭而撕裂的日本社會重新振作,高呼一種「具體」的新生哲學;白髮一雄通過參與並戰勝暴力,得以「與纏繞著他與那一代人的夢魘鬥爭,並打開了未來的希望之路」(蔡宇鳴,同上,2015年,頁23)。如今,白髮一雄的里程碑式作品開始受到全球學者和策展人的理解與重視,其傑作也被公認為他這一代最偉大的藝術聲音之一。
