"Homage to this image of the omniscient master Lobzang Chokyi Gyaltsen Pal Zangpo, blessed by the hand of his reverence. Mangalam."

The present sculpture depicts a portrait of Lobzang Chokyi Gyaltsen (1570 - 1662), the First Panchen Lama, according to the earlier system of ordering used by the Ganden Podrang and Lhasa administration. Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen tutored the Fifth Dalai Lama, who in 1667 instated the Gelug Line of Panchen incarnations. The principal seat of power was located at Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Tsang Province.

Several portraits of Lobzang Chokyi Gyaltsen exist in both painting and sculpture. A similar example to the present bronze sold at Sotheby's New York, March 17, 2017, lot 1035 (Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 12935), and shows likeness in the facial features, the balding pate, the articulation of the upper eye lids, the high cheek bones, narrow chin and protruding ears.
